Abstract

The article presents the results of a research work aimed at addressing a regional problem with national and even international projection: school violence. The objective of the study is to expose the presence of school violence in Yucatecan classrooms, based on the analysis of the different ways in which students and teachers of basic level educational institutions face this phenomenon, as well as the repercussions on school performance. and as a factor causing situations of educational backwardness. The study follows a methodology with a mixed approach, where 165 basic level students (high school) from 5 public schools located in the city of Mérida, Yucatán participated. The data was collected through work with 13 focus groups made up of students belonging to these schools. In the results of the study, a fear was found on the part of the students of violent behavior within the classrooms and a broad negative impact on the academic performance of the students. In the conclusion, the repercussions that such fear can generate in school life and the academic performance of high school students are discussed.
