Abstract

In the aspiration to propose an educational intervention to improve the quality of teaching, a study is carried out with high school students, with the aim of characterizing the actions and levels of understanding when they face the task of solving algebraic problems of verbal enunciation. By means of the content analysis method, the responses, both to the written test and in the individual interviews, show the existence of difficulties in the qualitative understanding of problems and the lack of knowledge of the procedures that are necessary to solve problems independently. It concludes on the need to carry out an educational intervention in basic secondary education, as an opportunity to improve the quality of school instruction. Finally, recommendations are provided on didactic procedures to be used and possible actions to be implemented in the training of mathematics teachers.
