Fields forbidden. Testimonials from university students about gender inequality

Abstract

This article has the main objective of showing the inequality gaps in the educational opportunities faced by women in higher or university education, particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) or STEM (in Spanish) careers and that cover a wide range of university education in Mexico. This problem is historical, but, with such topicality, that it deserves to be analyzed, given the lack of actions and effects that reduce inequality. With an inductive methodology and through thematic interviews with students pursuing STEM careers, results were obtained that demonstrate the prevalence of sexist practices in the classroom, which discriminate against them only because of gender. As main conclusions, the need for a change in the mentalities of teachers, in the curricular approach and in the structure of higher education institutions that favor equal relations between students is highlighted.
