Abstract

This

study explored the relationship between academic achievement in writing biographical texts and letters and reading, and five variables of opportunity to learn (OTL): Quality of Teaching (Teacher support in Spanish teaching and Cognitive activation) and Teaching Practices (Directed instruction, formative evaluation, and student-oriented instruction), based on three 2012 PISA self-report scales, adapted to Spanish teaching. A total of 120 sixth-grade primary school students from two rural schools of Morelos, Mexico participated. The Teacher support in Spanish teaching (positively) and Student-oriented instruction (negatively) were the variables that significantly predicted academic achievement. Likewise, convergent and divergent validity of constructs with good goodness of fit were found for the measures of academic achievement, teaching quality and teaching practices.
