Abstract

The objective of this article is to determine the lexical performance of students entering the Journalism career. The predominant methodology is qualitative, although statistical methods such as lexical-statistics are used in data processing. 47% of the sample shows low lexical availability and the global lexical richness index is low, since only after 2.3 words in the first question and 2.6 in the second does a word of notional semantic content appear. It is concluded that the students who enrolled in the Journalism career at the University of Matanzas in the 2019-2020 academic year have a deficient lexicon, demonstrated in their lexical performance by measuring their availability and index of lexical richness.
