Abstract

The designation with an allegorical name to Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda of butterfly farm that is built in Camagüey, Cuba, conceived according to the sustainable development goals (Agenda 2030) is based. The objective is to demonstrate how the link between science and art can be put into function of raising the environmental culture of the population, as well as the role that corresponds to the community and the University in this homework. The methods: historical-logical, analytical-synthetic and inductive-deductive, were used to process information from documentary analysis and exchange with specialists. The interdisciplinary conception of the new institution is exposed; the link that united the Cuban-Spanish writer with the entomological fauna of the Antilles and with scientists of her time who investigated in this regard is discussed; the planning to pay homage to the exalted poet and, at the same time, take advantage of her work, popularity and prestige, for the environmental education is described. It is concluded that an establishment dedicated to the breeding and exhibition of butterflies, managed by the community, but conceived as a university teaching unit, can incorporate into the fulfillment of its educational functions, the existing links between the artistic creation of local figures with the science.
